Did the Euphrates originally empty into the Mediterranean?
The Euphrates River was one of the great arteries of the ancient Near East, flowing from modern-day Turkey through Syria and Iraq before joining the Tigris and emptying into the Persian Gulf.
It supported some of the world’s earliest cities and empires.
Many of the cultures that emerged along its banks inter- sect with the historical and literary background of the Bible.
A recent study proposes that the Euphrates may have emerged only within the last few million years through the merger of two river systems that once flowed in a completely different direction.
According to a team of researchers led by Andrew S.
Madoff, these rivers originally flowed southwest across Anatolia and emptied into the eastern Mediterranean rather than southeast toward the Persian Gulf as the Euphrates does today.
The team’s conclusions are based on multiple lines of evidence.
The researchers examined underground images of rock layers beneath the Mediterranean Sea, studied satellite maps of the landscape, and traced how movement along major fault lines in modern Turkey may have altered river courses over millions of years.
The most important evidence comes from two enormous sediment deposits buried beneath the eastern Mediterranean.
The authors argue those deposits result from two ancient rivers that emptied there, which correspond roughly with the two headwater tributaries of the modern Euphrates, the Karasu and Murat rivers.
The team argues that during the late Miocene, about 5 to 10 million years ago, these rivers flowed independently and southwestward into the Mediterranean basin.
After mapping the deposits via underground imaging techniques, the researchers found they are thickest right where the rivers would have splashed into the Mediter ranean.
Also, one of the deposits, the Hander deposit, had been analyzed in a previous study, and the team found the same kinds of rock fragments present there as were present upstream at the headwaters.
They argue the Paleo Karasu river carried that sedimentary material down into the Mediterranean.
The study places the two rivers during the Messinian Salinity Crisis, a dramatic geological event between about 5.

33 million years ago, when the Mediterranean became partially cut off from the Atlantic Ocean and water levels dropped.
During this interval, the authors argue, the Paleo Karasu and Paleo Murat rivers delivered enormous quantities of sediment into the Mediterranean.
To estimate the size and power of these ancient rivers, the team calculated the volume of the deposits and estimated how quickly they accumulated.
Surprisingly, the results suggest that although the ancient drainage basins were much smaller than those of the modern Euphrates or the Nile, the rivers may have carried enormous amounts of water and sediment.
Such discharge rates imply wetter conditions, greater relief, and more intense precipitation than previous reconstructions of the region have suggested.
So, why did the rivers shift course from southwest to southeast and come to run into each other?
The authors argue that tectonic activity gradually diverted both river systems.
Movements along major fault systems, including the East Anatolian and North Anatolian faults, altered regional topography and redirected river flow.
Eventually, the two systems merged and began flowing toward the Persian Gulf, forming the modern Euphrates River about 1.

For students of the Bible, the study does not alter the historical setting of ancient Israel, which emerged only within the last few thousand years.
By the time the biblical kingdoms arose, the Euphrates had already assumed its modern course.
Nevertheless, the study provides valuable insight into the deeper geological history of one of the world’s most important rivers.
The wrath of God, not what most people imagine.
Many people today have a very simplified view of God.
They picture a loving God, a compassionate God, a God who would never bring judgment.
But what if that picture is only part of the story?
Years ago, during a live radio interview, a straightforward question was asked, “What is the central message of your ministry?”
The response was immediate, “The soon return of Jesus in wrath.
”
The reaction came just as quickly, “What do you mean, wrath?
Your God sounds like a monster.
” And with that, the conversation abruptly ended.
Yet, the response was hardly unexpected.
The idea that God could judge, that God could express wrath, is something many people dismiss before they ever examine it.
And that is where the deeper misunderstanding often begins.
Scripture is unmistakably clear about one truth, God is love.
John chapter 3:16 reminds us that God gave his son for the world.
And 1 John chapter 4:8 plainly states, “God is love.
”
But scripture does not end there.
It also reveals that God is holy, and his holiness changes everything.
A holy God cannot simply ignore sin.
He cannot pretend it does not exist.
He must respond to it.
According to the Bible, that response comes in one of two ways, grace or wrath.
Most people are familiar with grace, but far fewer understand wrath.
John chapter 3 verse 36 explains that whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son remains under the wrath of God.
It may not be a popular message, but it is a consistent one throughout scripture.
Many assume that wrath belongs only to the Old Testament, as though God judged in the past, but no longer does today.
Yet, the Bible says otherwise.
Malachi chapter 3 verse 6 declares, “I, the Lord, do not change.
”
And Hebrews chapter 13 verse 8 affirms that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
If God was just then, he remains just now.
If he dealt with sin in the past, he will deal with it in the future as well.
What many people overlook, however, is that God’s wrath is never arbitrary or uncontrolled.
It is not reckless anger.
It serves a purpose.
Scripture describes several expressions of it.
There is consequential wrath, where people experience the results of their own choices.
There is cataclysmic wrath, seen in events that shake societies and nations.
There is also abandonment, where God allows people to continue down their chosen path without intervention.
Romans chapter 1 illustrates this principle clearly.
When truth is continually rejected, God does not always respond immediately.
Sometimes he allows the consequences of those choices to unfold naturally.
This is not merely punishment.
It is also a warning.
Throughout biblical history, God never brought judgment without first providing warning.
Before the flood, Noah preached for 120 years.
Before the destruction of Sodom, Abraham was informed.
Before Nineveh faced judgment, Jonah was sent.
Warning always precedes judgment because even in wrath, God demonstrates mercy.
Scripture also speaks of a future expression of wrath, one that will not be local or limited, but global in scope.
The book of Revelation describes a series of events that increase in intensity over time.
These are not portrayed as random disasters, but as a progression, providing opportunities for people to recognize what is happening and respond.
Yet even then, many will refuse.
Revelation chapter 9 describes people continuing in their ways despite the signs surrounding them.
This reveals a deeper issue.
The problem is not a lack of evidence.
It is the condition of the human heart.
As evangelist Billy Graham once observed, the same sun that melts butter hardens clay.
The same truth can lead one person to repentance and another to resistance.
Ultimately, everything comes back to a simple reality, grace or wrath.
It is not something imposed without choice, nor something assigned at random.
It is a response to a decision.
