In July 2014, Selena Harroway, 26, and Siran Hales, 28, embarked on the little-known Wolf Creek Trail in the Grand Canyon.
An experienced guide and a novice photographer planned to spend three days capturing unique views inaccessible to ordinary tourists.
They found his car in the parking lot, but most of his equipment was still intact.
They simply disappeared, and at the camp the tent and most of the equipment remained untouched.
[music] They simply disappeared.
Three years later, at dawn on September 1, 2017, some German tourists saw a solitary figure [music] on the edge of a cliff near the Lipan Point lookout.
It was Sairan, emaciated, with bulging eyes and a long beard.
Found alive 3 years after his disappearance, he refused to speak, repeating only one phrase.
I couldn’t save her.
He took her away.
What happened to Selena? And who was this mysterious “he” whom the man who knew the canyon like the back of his hand feared so much? On July 21, 2014, at 9 a.m.
, Selena Harrow placed her cup of coffee on the counter of the Pine Brew coffee shop in Flagstaff.
She had just finished her morning shift and was preparing for the most important meeting of the month.
In 5 minutes Siran Hales would arrive, a local legend among the Grand Canyon guides, whom he had been trying to convince for three weeks .
“You can’t convince him,” Josh said.
The owner of the coffee shop was cleaning the coffee machine.
Selena just smiled.
Her phone already had 26 travel journal rejections, [music] but she knew her photos were worth more than typical tourist snapshots.
[music] The door opened and Ciran entered, tall, tanned, and with piercing gray eyes.
He sat down silently at the counter and ordered a coffee.
You’ve only brought the map.
Selena asked, sitting down next to him.
Instead of answering, he opened a worn map of the park that was on the counter.
The Wolf’s Ravine.
His finger touched the zigzag line that snaked along the eastern side of the canyon.
It is the most difficult route to take without special permits.
We will lose contact after the first corner.
Three days without a shower or [music] amenities and no guarantee of photos worthy of National Geographic.
That’s why I need you.
Selena placed the photo album on the table.
Siran glanced through the pages and her face gradually changed.
“Okay,” he finally said, “but you do everything I tell you without question.
” The next day they met at Canyon Edge Outfitters, [music] a camping equipment store.
Siran methodically checked all the elements of his [music] equipment, double-checked his water reserves, and tested the strength of his strings.
She rejected half of the things Selena had put [music] in the backpack and replaced them with lighter ones.
The backpack should not weigh more than a quarter of your body weight, he explains.
Every extra kilo will feel like you weigh 10 by the fifth day.
But we’re only going to be there for three days, Selena objects.
At the visitor center, ranger Mike Cortes took a long look at his documents and itinerary.
The wolf’s ravine, in July, looked at Siran with suspicion.
Did you know that there isn’t a single drop of water from the black crest to the gray eagle canyon? I know these places better than you do, Mike.
Siran smiled.
The ranger reluctantly stamped the permit .
Stay on the main path.
Make signals every night.
If you haven’t returned by 25, we will send out a search party.
As they walked back to Siran’s car, Selena stopped at the exit of the center and called her sister.
Kate, it’s me.
We’re on our way.
Are you sure about that siran? Her sister sounded worried.
You barely know him.
Wine highly recommended by locals.
He has been fixing the park’s trails for 15 years .
They say he has traveled the canyon from east to west.
Okay, but send me a message as soon as you have coverage and don’t do anything stupid for a photo.
They left Siron’s blue Chevy Taho [music] in a small parking lot at the entrance to the trail.
It was still early, 7:30 in the morning, but the sun was already starting to warm things up.
” Let’s stick to the route,” he told Selena.
No detours or shortcuts.
The slightest mistake could cost us our lives.
If we split up, we’ll meet at the last stop.
If the other person does not appear within two hours, activate the emergency beacon.
The first day of the excursion was perfect.
The path wound through the red rocks, offering breathtaking panoramas.
Selena took hundreds of photos, changed lenses, and experimented with filters.
Saan waited patiently until each photo session was over, showing her the best angles and telling her the story of the canyon.
” These layers of purple,” he said, running his hand over the rock.
They were formed 2 billion years ago.
Imagine you are photographing the oldest rocks in North America.
They camped on a small plateau just as the sun began to set.
Siran quickly set up the tent and lit a small fire.
Selena enjoyed watching the beans and bacon fry in her pot.
When dinner was ready, they sat side by side, watching as the last rays of the sun [music] turned the rocks into molten gold.
Look, Sairan pointed towards the edge of the eastern horizon.
I think something is flickering.
Selena narrowed her eyes.
It looks like a light.
Perhaps another group of hikers on this trail.
I don’t believe it .
Probably a glow from the rock.
But during the night, Siran left his tent several times and looked towards that distant horizon.
Indeed, something was flashing there, a faint light that disappeared and reappeared as if transmitting a signal.
He tried to push away his anxiety, but his instinct, honed over years in nature, was sounding the alarm.
The next day, Selena suggested a change of route.
“I’ve heard there are some stunning sunrise views at the eastern end of Crow Rock,” he said, running his finger over the map.
“We could leave more things at the camp and only take the essentials.
” Siran hesitated.
“The slope is very steep, and we didn’t record this part of the route, but we’ll be back at camp by sunset.
Do you know these places?” She finally agreed.
They left the tent, most of the supplies, and Sairan’s backpack at camp, taking only the camera equipment, water, some food, and a first-aid kit.
Selena didn’t know that this would be the last time she would see her camp.
They were returning from Crow Rock around 2 p.
m.
Selena was beaming with success.
She had managed to take some photos that she was sure would be accepted by the most prestigious magazines.
She was a little ahead of the others when she suddenly froze.
“Sairan!” she shouted.
“Someone has broken into our camp.
” The tent had been opened and turned upside down.
The food was scattered everywhere.
Siren’s backpack was gone, as well as the first-aid kit and most of the water.
Siren’s notebook was lying on the ground with several pages torn out.
“Come back!” “To the trail,” he ordered.
But when they turned around, they saw him: a tall figure in a worn khaki jacket with a hood pulled down over his face.
The man stood motionless, watching them from about 50 meters away.
“We’re not looking for trouble,” he said loudly.
“If you want our supplies, we’ll go on our way.
” The figure didn’t reply, just watched, and then, as if vanishing into thin air, disappeared behind the rocks.
” Run,” Cyrus ordered, grabbing Selena’s hand and leading her toward the main trail.
They ran quickly, but the path [music] that had seemed so clear in the morning now seemed completely different.
The sun was already setting, the shadows were lengthening, and every curve seemed unfamiliar.
On July 25 at 10 a.
m.
, Kate Harrow called the national park service.
Her sister had not returned at the agreed time and had not contacted her.
An hour later, the guards found Sa’s car in the parking lot intact.
At 3 p.
m.
, helicopters with search teams took off towards the Bovchi Yar route.
At nightfall that same day, they found the camp destroyed.
The dogs followed a trail that led east, but it was interrupted in a large rocky area.
The search lasted 8 days.
They combed every gorge, cave, and ledge along a 15- mile radius.
The helicopters flew for as long as the weather [music] allowed.
Thermal imaging cameras, drones, and top researchers were involved.
But Selena Harrow and Siran Hales seemed to have vanished into thin air with no signs of a struggle, no personal belongings, just a torn tent and footprints at the campsite, and one more thing that investigators kept secret.
On the surviving page of Siran’s diary , found on the floor, was a creepy eye, clumsily drawn by someone else’s hand.
The operation was suspended on August 2.
The official statement read: “Disappearance under unexplained circumstances.
” Over time, the story disappeared from the news.
For everyone except their family and friends, Selena and Siran became just two names on a long list of those swallowed up by the majestic and merciless Grand Canyon.
Three years have passed, three anniversaries of the disappearance, three birthdays that Kate Harrow celebrated without her sister.
Selena and Siran had not yet been legally declared dead.
It took 7 years.
Their files were in the archives of the Coconino County Missing Persons Unit, reviewed periodically, but no new leads emerged.
Kate moved to Flagstaff and rented a small apartment near the cafe where Celina had worked.
He often traveled to the Grand Canyon, talking to the park rangers and putting up new brochures, even though he knew it was useless.
Siran’s parents, an elderly couple from Utah, had long since lost hope and were only praying that at least some remains would be found.
[music] The morning of September 1, 2017 was unusually cool.
[music] A group of German tourists arrived at the Lipan Point lookout before dawn to photograph the first rays of sunlight over the canyon.
Hans Weber, a 60-year-old professor from Munich , moved a little away from the group looking for a better angle.
At first it seemed like a strange rock.
Against the sun, at the edge of the cliff, stood a motionless human figure.
She was dirty, wearing ragged clothes, with long hair and a beard.
Hans approached hesitantly.
“Hello, can I help you?” he asked in broken English.
The man turned around slowly.
Her eyes, reddened [music] from prolonged exposure to the sun, looked right through Hans.
His hoarse voice sounded as if he hadn’t used it in a long time.
I, Cyrus, staggered and would have fallen off the cliff if Hans hadn’t grabbed me under the arms.
“Snell!”, the German shouted to his teammates.
“Quickly! Siran—and it was him—was taken first to the ranger station and then by helicopter to the hospital in Flagstaff.
Doctors diagnosed him with severe dehydration, exhaustion, numerous infected cuts, two broken ribs that hadn’t healed properly, and severe swelling in his left leg.
His arms were covered with strange, fine scars like those from blades or sharp stones.
On his shoulder was something that looked like a burn mark, the crude image of an eye, almost exactly like the one found in his journal three years earlier.
Saan barely reacted to external stimuli, didn’t respond to questions, and was in a state close to catatonia.
The only emotion he showed was when a nurse tried to take him to the window in the ward.
He screamed in terror and cowered in a corner, covering his head with his hands.
When the sheriff received the news, he personally informed Kate Harrow.
She arrived at the hospital two hours later, barely able to stand because of the Emotion.
“Where’s Selena?” were her first words upon entering the room.
“She’s alive.
” Siran slowly raised her gaze.
The name Selena seemed to pierce through her numbness.
Her lips trembled, and something akin to understanding appeared in her eyes.
” Kate,” she whispered, recognizing her.
Kate approached and took her hand.
” Siran, where’s my sister?” Her face contorted with a pain that transcended the physical.
She covered her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking.
“I couldn’t save her,” she whispered.
[music] He took her away.
Who took her? Where is he now? But Saan sank back into himself.
Her eyes became vacant.
His hands [music] were trembling.
He just kept repeating the same phrase.
I could n’t save her.
He took her away.
A doctor entered the room.
Dr.
Elis, an old man with a gray mustache.
“Miss Harrowy, we need to talk,” he said, pulling her aside.
Mr.
Hales’ mental state is extremely unstable.
She has been through something so horrible that her mind is blocking out those memories to protect herself.
“But he’s alive,” Kate insisted.
“He’s the only one who knows what happened to my sister.
” “Yes, but we can’t pressure him.
It could make things worse or cause him to create false memories.
We have to be very careful.
” News of Saan’s return spread like wildfire.
The press surrounded the hospital demanding interviews.
Coconino County Sheriff Robert Jenkins called an urgent press conference.
Everyone wanted to know one thing: what had happened to Celina, and where was she now? Siran’s parents arrived in Flagstaff.
A Mr.
Hales Gray and his wife, a weary woman with kind eyes, sat by their son’s bedside for a long time, holding his hands.
He recognized them, but couldn’t hold a conversation.
On the third day of his stay in the hospital, Saan had his first interview with a psychiatrist, Dr.
Meredith Chang, a trauma specialist.
Saan told her quietly, “You’re safe.
No one is going to force you to talk about anything you’re not ready for, but if you want to say something, I’m listening.
” He remained silent for a long time.
A while later, he suddenly said clearly and calmly, “He wasn’t a lost tourist, he was a hunter.
” [music] “He was expecting us.
” ” A hunter?” Dr.
Chang asked gently .
“Can you tell me more about him?” Siran was silent again, but after a few minutes continued.
” I called him the Shadowhunter.
He lives in a canyon.
He never spoke, he just watched.
He was there alone.
Yes, alone.
Always alone.
” Cyrus suddenly tensed .
His eyes, his eyes.
And then something happened that the doctors feared.
Saan screamed heart-wrenchingly, terribly.
He fell out of bed, crawled underneath, trembling.
Nurses rushed into the room with a sedative.
After this incident, Saan was silent again.
The doctors forbade any [music] questioning, but Sheriff Jenkins insisted.
The case became public, and now his reputation was in question.
If there really was a maniac in the canyon, he could explain not only the disappearance of Selina and Syran, but also other unsolved cases in the region.
The sheriff called a special meeting with the FBI.
The case was reclassified from missing persons to suspected murder and kidnapping.
And Siran remained in her own world.
Every night she screamed in her sleep, calling for Selena, begging someone to stop.
And every morning she woke up forgetting those nightmares, but with dark circles under her eyes.
And the same question for the nurses: How long? When they answered three years, she closed her eyes and whispered, barely audible, “It’s too late.
” It’s too late.
To Kate these words sounded like a death sentence, but deep down she still believed her sister was alive.
He took an indefinite leave of absence from work and stayed in a cheap motel near the hospital, spending all his time by Siran’s bedside.
On the tenth day, his condition improved slightly.
He started eating on his own and answering simple questions.
The doctors reduced the dose of sedatives and it was then [music] during one of Kate’s visits, when he suddenly grabbed her hand.
“I have to tell you something,” he said clearly, although his voice still sounded hoarse and uncertain.
before he takes her somewhere else.
Listen carefully, Kate.
I’ve seen his face and when I get out of here I’m going to find him.
I will recognize him.
Who is Cyrus? Kate could barely contain her excitement, but Cyrus stepped back again as if frightened by his own courage.
This time, however, she neither screamed nor hid.
He just stared out the window.
to the distant silhouette of the canyon, barely visible on the horizon.
[music] Her eyes were no longer empty, but full of determination.
The mystery deepened.
The only person who knew the truth teetered on the edge between oblivion [music] and horrible memories.
And somewhere, perhaps, Selena was still waiting to be rescued.
During the third session with the psychologist, Sa began to talk.
“He wasn’t an ordinary criminal,” Sair whispered, holding a glass of water with trembling hands.
He was part of the canyon like a spirit in human form.
Dr.
Chang listened patiently.
She and FBI agent Richard Gant sat facing each other without interrupting, giving Siren time.
“How long had he been living there?” Gant asked carefully.
“Years.
” perhaps decades.
He was called the Shadowhunter because he could blend in with the rocks, make himself invisible.
He never spoke a single word, only gestures and a look.
This time Siran did not collapse.
Something about him seemed to have grown stronger during the past week.
“Can I show you where he first detained us ?” said an old miner’s barracks in a side canyon 15 miles east of our camp.
The locals called it the witch’s passage camp [music].
Sinclair, the Coconino County detective, who had been silently standing by the window, approached.
“Find this place on the map.
” Siran nodded, leaning over the map he had laid out, but it is not marked on the official maps.
The only way to get there is through a narrow passage between these rocks.
He quickly drew a detailed diagram on another sheet of paper.
Her hands trembled slightly, but the lines were confident and precise.
It kept us connected, but in the early days I managed to hide my diary under the bunk beds in the barracks.
If it’s still there, you’ll find a map of the other places.
“Other places?” [music] Gant asked.
So there was more.
The barracks was only a temporary shelter.
Siran nodded.
Then he took us further into the canyon to a place called the Devil’s Quarry .
That’s where their true home is.
The team left the following morning.
Six experienced park rangers , Detective Sinclair, Agent Gant, two mountain rescuers and, against everyone’s protests, Kate Harrow.
“That’s my sister,” he said.
I’m coming .
The journey was exhausting and dangerous.
They wandered among identical red rocks until one of the rangers spotted the inconspicuous passageway that Cyrus had described.
“Now I know why they didn’t find them 3 years ago,” Sinclair said as he squeezed through a narrow opening.
After 6 hours of arduous march they saw the barracks, a ruined building wedged between rocks.
The green paint had faded long ago.
The doors were missing and the windows were boarded up.
The team entered with their weapons ready.
Inside, chaos reigned.
Overturned furniture, empty shelves, strange marks on the walls.
“Someone used to live here,” Gant said [music] looking around the room.
And not long ago, Sinclair approached a wooden cot, exactly as Siran had described it.
“There’s something,” he said, reaching into the opening [music] wrapped in plastic.
The detective pulled out a small leather-bound notebook with the initials SH on it.
Kate held her breath.
The first pages contained the usual travel notes, but then nature changed.
Day 3, night, something is wrong.
I’ve seen strange lights.
Selena says they are glows, but I feel like they are watching us.
The last entry was made in shaky handwriting.
He caught us.
I don’t know who he is.
He doesn’t speak.
If you’re reading this, we’re trapped.
See the map on the last page.
He’s taking us there.
Selena thinks he’s a collector.
He takes souvenirs from the canyon.
Sometimes things, sometimes people.
On the last page there was a map marked Devil’s Quarry [music] and an arrow.
His main residence.
In the farthest corner of the barracks, the forest ranger found some more objects [music].
A torn camera strap with a unique weave that Kate immediately recognized as the work of her sister and a homemade tripod stick.
This finally confirms Siran’s story .
Gant said.
The ranger [musician] who accompanied the group carefully studied the map.
The unofficial name is Devil’s Quarry.
On maps it is called [music] red lainto.
It is one of the most dangerous places in the park.
Sharp stones, snakes, [music] landslides.
There are no tourist routes there.
“If this Shadowhunter has been living there for years, he knows every nook and cranny,” Gand said.
That explains why he and Selina couldn’t escape.
Kate, who had remained silent until then, suddenly asked, but how could Sa have escaped on her own? And why now, after 3 years? This question remained unanswered.
The team set up hidden cameras around the barracks in the hope that the hunter would return and headed back to prepare for the main operation, an expedition to the Devil’s Quarry.
“We need someone who knows the area,” Sincla said.
“And I know someone who knows her.
” When Kate left the barracks, she touched the wall where her sister might have been sitting.
“We will find you,” he whispered.
I swear.
Finally, the investigation had a concrete direction.
Now they knew where to look.
They had evidence and a map.
And somewhere deep within the Devil’s Quarry, answers awaited them, and possibly Selena.
The expedition to the devil’s quarry lasted 3 days.
The group was [music] led by Ernest Wilkins, a 70-year-old former forest ranger who had spent more than 40 years in the canyon.
His face, riddled with deep wrinkles, was as dark and dry as the desert itself.
“This is no ordinary walk,” he warned the team during the briefing.
“If you lose contact with me, consider yourselves dead.
” The team consisted of eight rangers, three mine rescue specialists, Detective Sinclair, Agent Gant, and Wilkins.
Kate Harrow [music] had begged to be included.
But this time they rejected her.
It was too dangerous.
They set off at dawn on September 12, the day the canyon temperature dropped below 90 degrees for the first time in a month.
Each one carried full equipment, [music], water for 4 days, walkie-talkies and GPS navigators.
” GPS doesn’t always work there,” Wilkins warned.
“The signal bounces off the canyon walls and gives you false coordinates.
” “Just follow the sun and my markings.
” They walked the first 15 km along the usual trail.
Then Wilkins led them sideways through an unmarked pass into a narrow gap between rocks.
The opening was so tight that some had to take off their backpacks and drag them along.
” This is the needle, [music] the safest way into the quarry,” Wilkins explained.
“We have to go out the other way.
” When they emerged from the crevice, a completely different world opened up before them [music].
A huge pit surrounded by craggy red cliffs, a chaos of sharp stones, deep cracks and trembling supports.
[music] “Jesus!” one of the rangers whispered.
How can we even navigate here? Local miners used to extract mercury here in 1909, Wilkins replied.
But they left when the landslides began .
Since then, few people have come here.
They advanced slowly, controlling each step.
Wilkins [music] would stop from time to time, sniff the air, and listen.
“Someone has been here recently,” [music] said in the afternoon.
Fresh footprints, broken branches.
The team went on high alert.
The rangers had their weapons ready and negotiations were reduced to a minimum.
As night fell, they arrived at the entrance to a small valley surrounded by rocks.
In the center they could see a wooden cabin from which a thin stream of smoke was coming out.
“It’s not him,” [music] Wilkins said, looking at the cabin through his binoculars.
It’s Jake Faraday, an old hermit.
He has lived here for more than 30 years.
Calm, but strange.
Perhaps he knows something.
They approached cautiously.
When they were about 50 meters from the cabin, the door suddenly opened.
An old man with a rifle came out onto the porch.
“Don’t go any further,” he shouted.
“This is my land, Jake!” Wilkins shouted, taking a step forward.
“Do you remember when I pulled you out of that light back in the ’90s?” The old man lowered his rifle, looking at him.
“Enie, why on earth did you bring these people here?” It took them half an hour to convince Jake to let them in.
The cabin was unexpectedly tidy inside with wooden furniture, a mineral collection on the shelves, and old books.
“We’re looking for a man,” Sinclair explained.
“He might live around here in the quarry.
” “ No one else lives here,” Jake said.
Sinclair showed a composite sketch of the Shadowhunter based on Siren’s description.
“Have you ever seen this man?” Jake stared at the sketch for a long time, then [music] nodded slowly.
“I’ve seen him a few times.
He never comes near, but he watches.
I call him The Ghost.
He’s been here for 10 years, maybe more.
Do you know where he lives?” Jake pointed north.
“ In the old Mercury Mine, the Silver Ghost.
It’s a shitty place.
I don’t go down there.
It’s too dangerous.
” “How long ago was the last time you saw him?” “ A week ago, he was coming up the valley from the east carrying a big bundle.
He just tensed [music] Gant.
” “Alone, as always,” Jake confirmed.
“He’s always alone.
I’ve never seen him with anyone.
” They spent the night in the valley setting up their positions.
In the morning, Jake showed them the way to the Silver Ghost Mine.
“I’ll take you to the entrance,” he said.
“But I’m not going in.
” There are sinkholes and poisonous gases; the ghost knows every corner, every crack.
The trip lasted 3 hours.
The path wound between sharp rocks and sometimes disappeared completely.
Finally they came to a large hole in the rock over which hung a rusty plaque.
Silver Ghost.
1912-1923.
” You guys go from here,” Jake said.
Wilkins handed out protective masks and flashlights to everyone.
“We only move in groups of three.
” Nobody is leaving.
Stay in touch.
If you come across him, don’t shoot immediately.
” Try to catch him alive first.
” [music] They entered the mine.
The main tunnel was wide enough for a truck, but it soon branched off into dozens of smaller passages.
The air was thick with a palpable smell of sulfur.
On the walls were old charcoal inscriptions, warnings, directions, sometimes just names.
After 500 meters, they came across the first signs of life: a recent fire, food scraps, and empty cans.
The experienced investigator sat and stared at the ashes.
“It burned down last night.
It’s here.
” They pressed on, passing through deserted outposts, rooms with rusted equipment, [music] noisy passages.
On some of the walls were strange symbols: circles with dots inside, zigzags, primitive drawings of people.
” He’s marking [music] his territory,” Wilkins whispered.
Deep inside the mine, they found a branch leading to a small cave.
The entrance was disguised with old planks and rags.
When they were moved aside, the team froze at what they saw.
The cave was furnished like a primitive dwelling.
A metal bed with a mattress, a table with tools, shelves with books, a generator in one corner connected to several lamps.
On the walls were dozens of photographs, newspaper clippings, and maps.
But the most chilling discovery was a wall of photos of people.
Dozens of images taken from afar with long lenses, tourists of different ages and genders in different conditions.
Most didn’t even know they were being photographed.
Among them were several snapshots of Selina and Saan during their excursion.
” Jesus,” Sincler whispered, “is after them.
” On the table was a leather-bound journal.
Agent Gant carefully opened it.
Inside were pages of scribbled notes, drawings, diagrams.
“We’re dealing with a madman,” he said.
“He writes about clearing the canyon of invaders and protecting the sacred land from desecration.
He considers himself a defender of nature.
” Among the Among the photographs on the table, [music] one stood out: a building that looked like an abandoned observatory on a remote plateau.
Someone had drawn a red circle over it and written, “Last place, [music] end.
” At that moment, the voice of a ranger on duty outside [music] came over the radio.
“We have movement from the south entrance.
” Someone is approaching.
Everyone was frozen.
The sound was especially loud through the mine.
“Everyone to your positions,” Gant ordered.
He’s going home.
The tension in the air was almost palpable.
The team split up.
Two rangers stayed at the exit, while the rest spread out along the main tunnel [music] .
Sinclair and Gant hid behind a pile of old boxes with their weapons ready.
Wilkins disappeared into the darkness of the side passage.
His experience told him that the pursuer might try to escape that way .
The footsteps approached slowly [music] and rhythmically.
Whoever was walking was in no hurry and was not trying to make any noise.
It was as if he knew what awaited him.
First, a shadow appeared that stretched along the wall of the tunnel.
Then a silhouette appeared, a tall man with a worn jacket.
a backpack over his shoulders and what looked like a rifle in his hands.
“Police!”, shouted Sincla, jumping out of her hiding place.
[music] It all happened in an instant.
The man reacted instantly, threw down the rifle, which turned out to be an old home shotgun, and ran towards the side tunnel [music] .
But Wilkins was already expecting it, knocking him down with a precise move.
“Don’t move,” barked the old ranger, pressing his knee into the Shadow Hunter’s back.
The man stopped resisting as suddenly as he had tried to flee.
[music] When they turned him around, everyone saw the face that had haunted Sa’s nightmares for 3 years, tanned to a deep tan, with deep wrinkles, gray eyes and a long white scar from his temple to his chin.
He looked 50, maybe 60 years old, but his body [music] was lean and strong.
As the guards handcuffed him, Wilkins noticed a strange detail.
Look at his shoes.
The man was wearing expensive hiking boots that were much newer than the rest of his worn-out clothes.
“Holy [ __ ],” he whispered.
Those are Cyrus’ boots.
The Shadow Hunter did not resist as they lifted him up and led him through the mine to the exit.
He didn’t say a word, he just looked at each of them with the same penetrating gaze that Siran had [music] described, the gaze of a predator assessing its prey.
When they brought him out into the daylight, old Jake backed away.
[music] “My God, it’s,” she interrupted herself with a horrified look.
“Do you know him?” Sinclair asked.
It’s Robert Cutter.
He was a geologist with the national park service.
Everyone thought he had died in a landslide 15 years ago.
The Shadow Hunter, now Robert Cutter, looked at the old man, but showed no emotion.
His face remained calm, almost serene.
They set up a temporary camp near Jake’s cabin.
Cutter was thoroughly searched.
They stripped him of everything [music] that could serve as a weapon and tied him to a tree.
Still speechless, he calmly observed the team’s actions.
Sinclair and Gant returned to the cave to conduct a more thorough survey.
Among Cutter’s belongings they found what they were looking for, a small notebook that, according to Siran, belonged to Selena.
On the first page was his name and the date of the trip.
The last entry was dated August 20th of this year, just two weeks ago.
It seems he decided to push me away forever .
He mentioned a kind of observatory.
He said it would be my last home.
Sairan, if you’re reading this, know that I don’t blame you.
You did everything you could.
“She ‘s alive,” Sinclair whispered.
At least it was two weeks ago.
They also found a collection of trophies.
personal belongings of several hikers who had likely been victims of Cutter during his years of confinement.
Each object was marked with a date and a place, like a sinister museum of his achievements.
When they returned to camp, they encountered the same problem.
Cather was speaking.
“He won’t talk,” Wilkins said.
“I’ve seen them before, but we need to know where Selena is,” Sincla insisted.
This observatory [music] could be anywhere, not just anywhere.
Jake suddenly intervened, looking at a photograph he had found in the cave.
It is an old astronomical station on the Black Mesa plateau.
It was abandoned 30 years ago.
It is difficult to access.
There is only one path through a rocky outcrop.
Gant reported the findings by radio.
They were ordered to take Cutter to Flagstaff immediately.
A helicopter was called in to transport the prisoner.
“We can’t take any risks,” he said.
“If he’s up there at that observatory, we have to go.
” The decision has already been made to divide the group.
Three rangers and Gant would stay with Cutter waiting for the helicopter, while Cclire, Wilkins, the rest of the team and old Jake as a guide would go in search of the observatory.
This will be the hardest part of the trip, Jake warned.
Many have tried, but few have succeeded.
Before leaving, Sinclair approached Cutter, who was still sitting silently tied to a tree.
“Is she still alive?” he asked, looking directly into his prisoner’s eyes.
For the first time, the Shadow Hunter reacted.
A subtle, almost imperceptible smile slid across her lips and vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
But Sinre understood that was the answer.
The path to the Black Mesa plateau was exactly as difficult as Jake had warned.
A narrow path, almost invisible in some places, wound between sharp rocks and deep crevices.
They had to use climbing equipment to overcome particularly difficult sections.
The sun was already setting [music] when they reached the first ascent to the plateau.
A wide panorama opened up before them .
black as charred earth, cut by deep cracks, in the middle of which stood a solitary white stone building with a vaulted roof.
“An old astronomical station,” Jake pointed out, built in the 1930s to observe meteor showers.
Abandoned after the war.
“How did he get here with a prisoner?” one of the rangers wondered.
“Is there another way?” the old man replied.
From the north, it’s longer but gentler, and you can even go loaded down.
They began to descend towards the plateau.
When they were 1.
5 kilometers from the observatory, Sinclair ordered everyone to stop.
Wilkins and I will go ahead and assess the situation.
The others provide support and coverage.
[music] They slowly made their way towards the building using natural shelters.
The observatory seemed abandoned, with no signs of life or movement, [music] but something told them that this was not the case.
When they were about 100 meters from the entrance, Wilkins suddenly stopped Sinclair.
“Look,” he whispered, pointing in the opposite direction from the main entrance.
There, hidden behind a rocky outcrop, was another, smaller entrance.
“Someone has been through here recently,” said the old ranger.
More than once.
They approached the side entrance.
The door was ajar.
Sinclair pulled out his pistol and his flashlight.
He took a deep breath and moved forward.
Inside, darkness reigned.
The beam of light from the flashlight pulled dusty scientific instruments , broken furniture, and crumbling plaster out of the gloom.
But then, deep in the room, something made Sinclair’s heart sink.
Clear footprints were visible on the ground, [music] two sets, one large, male, the other small, female.
And the second set of footprints was recent, very recent.
Sinclair turned off the lantern and leaned against the wall.
“He’s here,” he whispered into his radio.
All teams surround the building.
A corridor covered in primitive drawings [music] led them to a large wooden door.
The sound of the moans intensified.
They burst into the room, illuminating it with their flashlights.
In another time, [music] had been the main hall of an observatory with a large telescope.
Around the room there were homemade furniture, water jugs and boxes of canned food.
In a corner, on the floor, a woman lay tied [music] to a metal pipe.
Selena approached cautiously.
Selena Harrow raised her head.
She had a gaunt face, dark circles under her eyes, and tangled hair.
“You are park rangers,” he whispered hoarsely.
“He will return soon.
” “We’ve got it,” Sinclair replied, cutting the ropes.
“Are you safe, Siran? [music] Is he alive?” “Yes, he led us to you.
” Selena cried softly, almost silently, as if she were afraid of being heard.
The medical team arrived, wrapped her in a blanket, and gave her hot tea.
He held me to clean me.
Selena says this when she recovers a little.
He said that I had desecrated his sanctuary.
He made me study his crazy records about the spirit of the canyon.
And Siran, what happened to her? We were together for the first few months.
Then Saan tried to run away from me.
The hunter caught him, beat him, and then forced him to leave.
He said that if he came back he would find me dead.
The helicopter arrived an hour later.
They carefully placed Selena on a stretcher.
[music] “The worst part wasn’t the physical suffering,” she said before she was taken on board.
The worst part was the feeling that you no longer existed for the world.
Meanwhile, the team thoroughly searched the building.
They found numerous Shadow Hunter records, diaries, [music], maps, plans.
They painted a terrifying picture.
The geologist who survived the landslide had gone mad [music] and decided that the canyon had chosen him to be its protector.
Sinclaire froze when he opened one of the folders.
Inside there were dozens of photos of tourists, guards, [music] expeditions.
Many of them had red crosses and the dates coincided with those of the disappearances over a period of 15 years.
“This is n’t just a kidnapper,” he whispered.
“This is a serial killer.
” A large-scale operation based on the maps was launched.
Teams combed remote areas of the Grand Canyon and found human remains, personal effects, and Cutter’s trophies.
Preliminary estimates indicated at least 12 victims.
Only Selena and Siran survived.
Their meeting at the Flagstaff hospital was the culmination of a story that stunned the United States.
Siran stood up from his chair as the gurney carrying Selena was wheeled in.
They didn’t speak, they just looked at each other, two broken but not destroyed people.
Then he took her hand.
“I came back for you.
Like I promised, I knew you’d come back.
That’s why I survived.
” Later, Cinkclire came to visit them.
“ He’s going to prison.
Life without parole.
” Siran looked out the window at the distant silhouette of the canyon.
“Don’t you understand? To him, prison is just another cave.
” [Music] He has already spent his life in isolation.
The only thing that matters to him is his mission, and it is not [Music] finished.
What will he wait for? The moment he can return her to the canyon, because he believes she belongs to him, and he will not rest until he finishes what he started.
A month has passed since Selena’s rescue.
Her physical recovery was faster than her psychological one.
The doctors were amazed by her resilience.
After three years of captivity, she retained a clear mind, but the nightmares did not leave her.
Sa’s recovery was slower.
Her body was very exhausted after the escape and wandering through the canyon.
However, a new strength was born within her, a determination she had never felt before.
[Music] One day, Sinclair brought them news.
The investigation had uncovered new details.
Robert Cutter, a former geologist, had experienced more than just a landslide.
Fifteen years ago, his expedition was caught in a sandstorm.
Two of his colleagues died, and Cher spent five days without water, hallucinating.
When he They found him, and he talked about speaking with the spirit of the canyon that had supposedly chosen him as its guardian.
He was fired from the National Park Service because of his unstable mental state.
But instead of seeking treatment, Cher returned to the canyon and disappeared.
We expanded the search, Sinclair said, and found four more bodies.
That makes 16 victims in 15 years.
Does he say anything? Siran asked.
Not a word.
Psychiatrists believe his silence is part of a ritual or a vow.
When Sinclair left, Selena spoke of her captivity for the first time in a long time.
He thought I was special, she whispered, looking out the window.
He said my photographs saw the soul of the canyon.
That’s why he didn’t kill me right away .
He wanted to teach me.
Siran took her hand.
I’m sorry.
I should have— she interrupted.
You did the only right thing.
You left so you could come back.
Otherwise, we’d both be dead.
A week later, Selena was released from the hospital.
Standing in front [Music] At the hospital, for the first time in three years, she felt true freedom and an indescribable fear of it.
“I can’t,” Selena replied.
“Not now.
It’s not over yet.
” She went back to the hotel room Kate had rented.
She turned on her laptop and started looking at the photos she had saved on the memory card Cer had kept as a relic.
[Music] In one of them, taken on the first day of their hike, she noticed something strange, a distant figure among the rocks they hadn’t [Music] seen before.
It had been following them from the beginning.
That evening, Selena got a call from Sinclair.
The DNA and dental results had just come in.
Two of Cutter’s victims were park rangers who had disappeared in 2009.
They were looking for him.
The next morning, she learned that Seiran had secretly met with Cutter’s lawyer.
” Why?” she asked when he went to see her.
“I wanted to look him in the eyes,” he replied, “to make sure he really couldn’t hurt anyone else.
And if He was silent for a few seconds.
His eyes were the same.
He has n’t changed.
He’s waiting for planning, but he’s in jail [music] under 24-hour surveillance.
That won’t stop him.
He’s part of the cannon, Selena.
And the cannon is patient.
That night Selena had another nightmare.
She saw Cter emerging from the shadows with the same cold stare and heard his voice the only time he spoke.
The cannon always gets away with it.
The following year, after rescuing Selena, she spent battling not only the nightmares but also the justice system.
Cter’s trial was one of the most high-profile in Arizona history.
Sixteen proven murders, two kidnappings.
The judge handed down sixteen life sentences.
Selena and Siran testified, reliving the nightmare again and again.
She testified calmly [music] and clearly, and he held back his anger.
When it was all over, they stood outside the courthouse holding hands.
” Now what?” Siran asked.
“Now we go back.
” They returned to the Grand Canyon, not as tourists or victims, but as guides.
Siran founded a small company specializing in safe hiking and educational programs.
Selena was a photographer, but now her photos spoke not only of the canyon’s beauty but also of its dangers .
Each group told its own story, not for sensationalism, but as a warning, so that tourists would understand that wild places are beautiful, but they demand respect.
Cutter was serving his sentence in a separate cell, just as Saan had predicted.
He never spoke and became a prison legend, an inmate whose eyes made even the guards tremble.
Sometimes Saan would wake from nightmares, but now Selena was by his side.
They understood a simple truth.
True healing is not about forgetting, but about turning pain into a force that helps others.
“ We have won,” Selena once said, taking pictures of the sunset from an observation deck.
safe.
“Not because I’m in jail, but because we’re back.
” Siran smiled as she put her arm around his shoulders .
“And we will never disappear again.
