The 14-Gun Monster That Erased Japanese Warships in Seconds

October 18th, 1943, 10:31 in the morning.

36 American bombers are flying directly into the most heavily defended Japanese base in the entire Pacific.

No fighter escorts, no backup, and the man leading them just threw away a direct recall order from his commanding general.

In 4 seconds, 14 machine guns will tear apart a Japanese warship so completely that the crew never gets a chance to fire back.

In 4 hours, 41 Japanese aircraft will be burning on the ground, three ships will be on the ocean floor, and 38 Japanese fighter pilots will be dead.

And the man who made it happen, Lieutenant Colonel Clinton TR will be standing in a general’s office 24 hours later, explaining why his radio operator accidentally didn’t receive the order to turn back.

Nobody believed the radio story.

Not for a single second.

But here’s the thing about results that nobody can argue with.

They make the lies irrelevant.

This is the story of how a mechanic’s insane idea, dismissed as suicidal by the Army Air Forces, outlawed by doctrine, and nearly court marshaled out of existence, became the most destructive anti-shipping weapon of the entire Pacific War.

That is the moment Papy Gun shows up with an idea that sounds on first hearing completely insane.

Paul Irving Gun is not a general.

It strikes the surface at a shallow angle like a flat stone thrown across a pond and it skips forward across the water closing the distance to the hull at water level where armor is thinnest and a flooding breach is hardest to contain.

You fit the bomb with a delayed fuse long enough for the aircraft to clear the mast before detonation and the explosion comes from below the water line instead of above the deck.

Doctrine says this is suicidal.

Flying a bomber at 50 ft above the water directly at a warship means flying through every gun that ship carries.

At that altitude and that speed, there is no room for evasion.

You are committed the moment you begin the approach.

Before the ship’s gun crews can accurately track an aircraft coming in that fast at that altitude, before they can coordinate defensive fire, before the bridge crew can direct an effective response, the B-25 is already inside their effective range and everything on that exposed deck is being hit by 50 caliber rounds at a rate that human beings cannot survive at their stations.

The guns don’t sink the ship.

The guns silence the deck.

They suppress the gun crews.

They kill the men at the anti-aircraft mounts.

They shatter the bridge windows and make directing fire from inside impossible.

They turn the 30 seconds of approach from a lethal gauntlet into something the attacking crew can fly through because the people who were supposed to be shooting back are no longer able to.

And then the skipped bomb hits below the waterline and the ship sinks.

Anyway, the first field modification is crude.

And Rabul doesn’t know they’re coming because nobody flies into that in this weather without fighter escort.

Nobody except the 345th.

36 B25s, 14 guns each, no escort, and a recall order that never arrived.

That was part one.

Papy Gun took a broken doctrine and replaced it with metal and mathematics.

The 345th Air Apaches took his four gun modification and turned it into 14.
